My children celebrated Halloween by participating in special events put on by their school--usually in the form of a harvest celebration (no ghosts, goblins or monsters) with food, music and games acknowledging the harvest. When I was gorwing up the church was a lot more strict that it is now. Movies, dancing, and card playing were absolutely forbidden, as was wearing any jewelry or makeup. Reading fiction books, listening to popular music and any non-religious art was also frowned upon. In fact, at our (SDA) church, we actually had a speaker that told everyone that any church music that was written in other than 4/4 time was dance music and should not be played in church! There were even people who would not wear leather shoes because the leather came from animals(!!) My point in all of this is that no matter where you go, there are fanatics who carry things entirely too far. I believe in moderation in all things. We can be good examples of christian behavior without making ourselves look ridiculous in the eyes of the world. I say let your conscience guide you and prayerfully make the decisions on whether to celebrate "pagan" holidays. One minister I know says that he would not even acknowledge Christmas if it wasn't for Easter.

Hi all, from an Australian. I am glad we don't observe Halloween here, but it seems to be gradually creeping in, driven by commercialism. Yes, if it did start to be observed here, the appropriate policy of a commited christian would be to ignore it as far as possible, without making a public fuss, as most participants have wisely said.
Christmas has been mentioned as another pagan festival, but which is not directly concerned with promoting a focus on satanic stuff, although I believe it has a subtil danger. OK, we know Jesus was born at a warmer time of the year, but all the attention made to "Santa Claus" is a definite diversion/distraction away from the amazing gospel story. In my family, yes we did have Santa, but told our kids that he was fictitious, they concentrated on the gifting -Jesus' birth side of christmas.
Easter is somewhat similar, with attention given to easter eggs and bunnies and hot cross buns, which are vestiges of the pagan spring fertility festival that Easter was originally (it comes in Autumn/Fall in the southern hemisphere!). If it was truly a memorial of Christ's death, it should be celebrated on the passover, not at the time of the full moon. Again, this is another distraction/diversion from the pure gospel. Again, in my family, we have a few chocolate eggs, but we don't make a big deal of it.

So, these all indicate the depth of the ferocious cunning of Satan to deceive, confuse and ensnare folk, and divert or distort the gospel story, to reduce and blunten the response of people to the gospel, alas (see 2 Thess. 2:7-11; 1 Peter 5:8).

We can be so thankful that God is infinitely stronger and wiser than Satan, and is most willing to help us with living in this sin-cursed world, including dealing with these originally heathen festivals (halloween still is, of course).

I vote for Jesus. I will not participate in any way with this evil holiday. Fear is not funny. Neither is death. I celebrate life and love. I stay out of the way on this party day.

I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior when my oldest child was 14 months old. I was almost immediately convicted of teaching her that there was a santa claus, a tooth ferrie, or an easter bunny. And most certainly knew not to take her out "trick or treating" on holloween. If we tell our children that there is a Jesus, but they cannot see him. And tell them that there are all of those other "beings" that i mentioned before; then what will they think of Jesus when we finally tell them that all of the other ones are not real? Some people say that "it's just fun for the kids and they need to have fun with it all." But my children have done just fine without me lieing to them about things that do not exist. We teach our children to not take candy from strangers...and then take them out one night of the year to accept it from a dozen or more of them? It just doesn't make sense to me. That is my opinion and feeling on the subject. thank you

Halloween: The only day on the calendar that is solely for the consideration of satanic behavior; a day when children go around begging for things that are unhealthy for them (candy) and in some cases behaving like little devile, throwing eggs and overturning garbage cans. It is not only the origin that is satanic; it is still satanic today. A lot of the pranks that are perpetrated are purely satanic. The idea of evil and devilry is still much alive in the celebration of halloween. Unlike Christmas, which began paganistic but now has more Christian overtones (yes, I know about the commercialism), halloween does not begin to cover up its evil.

I taught my daughter from a very early age why we do not participate in any form of recognizing halloween. She understood and never asked to go out. It was not an issue in school because she attended a very Christian school that ignored halloween. Dressing children up as Bible characters on halloween is insulting to the word of God. How much will we compromise? Do we really think that little kids know that they are dressing alternatively when the day and the activities are the same whether they are dressed as David or a power ranger? How dare us equate the cartoon characters and monster/scary costumes of halloween with the individuals who God appointed and chose to put into His Word. There is no comparison. We have to be so very careful.

I was a Pathfinder also, but did not go about collecting cans because of the day ... I felt (and still believe) that halloween should be completely ignored by Christians. I have a sign I put on my door that says "Jesus lives here. We do not celebrate halloween." There is also a drawing of a cross with a cloth on it, no one hanging from it, and a note that says "He Is Risen."

Too often, we allow creeping compromises to infiltrate our Christian experience. Things that appear "harmless" to children allow them to compromise more and more as life goes on. I do not believe that Christians should perpetuate the belief of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny or monsters under the bed. We should be honest with our children.

Satan exists by lies and compromise. He loves it when we accept his will and put a nonchalant spin on it. The fruit appeared beautiful to our first mother, but choosing it brought destruction and death on the world. halloween is all about this ... "Ye Shall Not Surely Did." We have to be so very careful.

I truly hope that October 31 is cold, rainy and overcast. Maybe children will stay home and I can get a quiet nights' sleep!
